EL CHUPACABRAS

The Legend of the Chupacabras That Terrorized Mexico in the 90’s

The mysterious monster sucked the blood of the animals until they died.

Surely more than once you have heard or read about the legend of the Chupacabras, a strange being, taken from the worst of your nightmares. And if you are a ‘child’ of the 90s, it is almost a fact that you grew up while this horrible monster terrorized Mexico, sucking the blood of hundreds of animals in a mysterious way when night fell.

However, if that strange episode in national history did not touch you, you should know that in 1996 in a municipality in the mountains of Puebla, the death of at least 30 sheep was reported, which overnight were left without a drop of life. blood. It was then that the state news covered the story and the drama quickly made the headlines of the main media in the country, becoming from that moment one of the most famous legends in Mexico.

The legend of the Chupacabra

After the news, speculation immediately began that it was the famous ‘Chupacabras’, a being that was talked about for the first time in Puerto Rico after complaints from several people. According to a BBC article, the first person to see the Chupacabra was Madeylen Tolentino, from Canóvanas, Puerto Rico, in 1995, as she claimed to see a being similar to an alien in front of the window of her house.

People began to tell that the strange monster had spikes on its back, long claws, and measured about 1 meter and 50 centimeters, so the morbidity and obvious sensationalism of the note began to make the legend of the Chupacabra popular. However, Mexico was the place where there were even people who claimed to have been attacked by this being, so panic began to spread throughout the country.

Scientists’ research

“At first I was skeptical about the existence of thecreature. At the same time, he was aware of the possibility of discovering a new animal. I didn’t want to ridicule the case or dismiss it. If the Chupacabra was real, I wanted to find it,” said Benjamin Radford of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry in the 2000s.     Precisely the existence of the Chupacabra was a mystery, because although a few claimed to see it, there were few scientific records of the strange being, so an in-depth investigation of the subject began that demystified the legend. Several DNA tests revealed that the terrible Chupacabra was actually a coyote, raccoon, or fox with mange, a disease that causes them to lose hair.

“The reason these animals were identified as Chupacabras was because they lost their hair. They had sarcoptic mange caused by mites, which is very common,” Radford said.

For her part, specialist in inflammatory skin diseases Allison Diesel of Texas A&M University confirmed the version and assured that “the disease can be frightening enough to make any animal look like a monster.”

And then, what was happening with the blood?

The scientist Radford explained that the blood leaks to the lowest part of the body where it coagulates and this gives the impression that there is no blood, so this made the legend of the Chupacabras even more believed, especially because in Latin America they are very believers in this type of stories and that is why the myth spread throughout Mexico in the 90s.
